This summer saw the return of the NatWest U19 Club T20 competition. The initiative is to help cricket clubs retain their young players and 25 clubs in Staffordshire entered and nationally over 625 clubs were involved across the country. The competition aims to recreate the atmosphere of the national NatWest T20 Blast locally, with music playing and players in coloured kit.
The initiative was created by ECB using insight from 1000 15 – 19 year olds, who indicated that they wanted to see some changes in their provision of cricket. 40% of those surveyed said that they intended to give up playing within the next 12 months. They wanted to have more opportunities to play with their friends; more opportunities to volunteer and take ownership within their club, and they wanted to create a club environment that was welcoming to their age group.
As a result, as part of the competition, U19 players have been creating new T20 team names, and organising fun, exciting activities at their home matches to engage with the local community. ECB has created a free on line e-Learning Activator course which trains and inspires the young volunteers to create the perfect cricketing experience for everyone involved.
