Leigh Caps a Great Innings

Former County Women's Coach Awarded Cap #1

Former Staffordshire Women head coach, Leigh Rees, was awarded the county's first cap in recognition of his oustanding support and service of the women's and girls' county game.

Leigh, who still coaches at Brewood and Wolverhampton CC, attended the May Bank Holiday county fixture at Milford Hall CC between Staffs and Worcestershire having been asked by new head coach Mark Shrehorn to present the newly introduced county caps to long-serving twins Kathryn and Charlotte Whyle. But his surprise was obvious when coach Shrehorn turned the tables and asked county captain Steph Butler to present Leigh with cap #1 to mark his fantastic contribution to women's and girls' cricket in Staffordshire over the last two decades.

"I'm hardly ever lost for words but this completely choked me up. I thought I was at today's game to present the first caps to Charlotte and Kathryn but I ended up being the first recipient. Total surprise and I struggled to get all the words I'd prepared out - hopefully i got there" commented Leigh whose wife Julie and son Matt were there to see the presentation and is pictured (centre) with his framed cap alongside coaches Mark Shrehorn (left) and Stuart Baker (right).

Head coach, Mark Shrehorn, who introduced the cap system said "It was only right that Leigh received the first cap after the fantastic work and commitment he has given to grow the game in Staffordshire. We have a strong heritage in the county for producing high qulaity women cricketers and Leigh has been hugley instrumental in achieving that."

Leigh did then go on to award caps number 2 and 3 to twin-sisters Kathryn and Charlotte Whyle who have progressed along the county pathway and whom Leigh has coached since they were nine.

The day was capped with a victory for the home side side over their Worcestershire counterparts, staffs compiling 220 for 9 fro their 50 overs before bowlig WOrcs out for 170 in the 48th over. You can read the full scorecard here

Rees commented later on Twitter "Thank you so much @StaffsCricket and @Staffs_Women and very well done on a great performance today. #honoured #proud"
