Northumberland v Staffs CCC Preview

Allan Smith previews the Unicorns T20 fixture at Jesmond

Following their disappointing exit from the Unicorns Trophy competition last Sunday by virtue of a one wicket loss to Shropshire, Staffordshire’s cricketers turn their attention back to the Unicorns T20 competition this Sunday when they make the trip to play Northumberland at Jesmond.

Staffs have two points from their two games against Cheshire in the competition with a win and a loss which is the same as their opponents Northumberland who won one and lost one of their two opening matches against Lincolnshire.

For the trip to the North East, Staffs have named a 15 man squad led by Kadeer Ali. Ex first class players Ben Cotton and Grant Thornton have again been named but the pair are currently trialling with other first class counties in an attempt to earn a new contract following their departures from Derbyshire & Warwickshire respectively. Their availability for the trip is dependent on whether they are involved in any second Xi games which will prevent them from travelling. Otherwise the rest of the squad remains the same as the team beaten by Shropshire with the addition of Longton’s Tom Steele.

A key player in the Northumberland line-up is likely to be former Durham wicket keeper/batsman Phil Mustard who was instrumental in his team’s success over Lincs.

The two matches start sat 11.00am and 2.30pm.

Staffs squad: Kadeer Ali, Sam Kelsall, Peter Wilshaw, Tim Maxfield, Michael Hill, Brinder Phagura, Ben Cotton, Grant Thornton, Aniz Raza, Mitchell Spencer, Dan Richardson, Ryan Hassett, Dan Gibbs, Rob Hemmings, Tom Steele.
