A winning start for the development sideStaffordshire’s Development XI got their 2019 season off to a winning start after defeating Warwickshire’s under 19’s by 51 runs in a 50 over game at Walsall. Playing their first match under the new regime of Greg Willott and Sam Kelsall, Staffs top order batsman all made half centuries as they posted a total of 254-4 from their allotted overs. An opening partnership of 108 between Walsall’s Shoaib Akhtar and Matthew Morris from Westhoughton was brought to a halt when Akhtar was run out for 58. Morris departed having just brought up his half century but the runs continued to flow with Longton’s Freddie Doorbar finishing unbeaten on 53 while Josh Morgan from Ticknall rattled up 55.
Replying Warwickshire’s youngsters slumped to 77-6 before a seventh wicket partnership of 74 gave them hope. However when Roshan Balaji was dismissed for 76 and Khalid Baig for 38 the innings collapsed to see them dismissed for 203 after 47.3 overs. James Cox of Wollerton was the pick of the Staffs attack claiming 5-22 from his 7 overs. Cheadle’s Matthew Goodwin picked up two wickets with Austen Crump, Mitch Spencer and Alex Coates claiming one wicket each.
